Sadhu Tapovatsaldas (pictured) of BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Nairobi welcomed calls for talks saying this offers a ray of hope as the country reels from youth-led demonstrations in demand for good governance.

He spoke at the start of Silver Jubilee celebrations of the BAPS Mandir in Thika which marked a special devotion for peace with a program for children and the youth.

“It is important for peace to prevail across the Kenyan fabric; in everyone’s minds, hearts and in our homes. It is a good thing that all the facets of the community come together on the table and embrace peace,” he said.

“In our temples across the country, we preach that there must be peace everywhere, no one should engage in any sort of violence basically because our God has taught us that there should never be violence, never in our homes or in the country,” said Sadhu.

Crucial role

The monk also observed that the youth play a crucial role in the country’s growth, hence the need to involve them in all decision-making processes.

Dharti Patel, a young professional said youth should be effectively involved in matters of national governance and peace processes through nurturing of various talents.

“Youth should be motivated to take up leadership roles early by giving them opportunities in the community, religious organisations and other areas so that we nurture their talents and allow them to grow,” said Patel.

National programmes

Another youth participant Dr Harsh Goswami concurred and said young people should be part of all religious, community and national programmes.

“Through involvement in these activities, they learn a lot about co-existence and national harmony and in this way, we can serve our society and nation better,” said Goswami.
