CJ Koome releases autobiography chronicling rise to Kenya’s top judicial office

Lady Chief Justice Martha Koome has launched her first autobiography, titled ‘Courting Courage’, as she recalls her upbringing as a village girl.

In a post on her official X account on Saturday, February 21, 2026, Koome, while expressing her joy to members present during the launch, noted that the launch was more than a book launch but a celebration of justice.

In the book Courting Courage Martha Koome tells her story of resilience and unwavering determination in pursuit of Justice.

The book further provides a look into Justice Koome’s life, from her childhood in Kithiu village, Meru County, to her historic appointment as Kenya’s top judge.

On her part, Koome described the book launch as a milestone she is proud of.

“I am proud to have officially launched my autobiography in Nairobi at the beautiful Safari Park Hotel, surrounded by my family, dear friends, and distinguished members of Kenya’s legal fraternity. It was more than a book launch but a celebration of justice, resilience, and the enduring strength of the rule of law and my history growing up,” Koome said.

In attendance was Africa’s first elected female president, Her Excellency Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

“I was especially honoured to have as Chief Guest Her Excellency Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first elected female president, whose presence elevated the evening beyond words. Her grace, wisdom, and trailblazing leadership continue to inspire generations across our continent,” she added.

On the other hand, in attendance was eminent jurists, senior counsel, members of the bench and bar, leaders from across government.

“The room was filled with eminent jurists, senior counsel, members of the bench and bar, leaders from across government, and other distinguished dignitaries, a powerful gathering of minds committed to justice and nation-building. It was truly a historic moment,” Koome said.

According to Koome, who currently serves as the first Female Chief Justice of Kenya, her upcountry upbringing shaped her ambitions through trials and triumphs.

“An evening of pomp and colour. Of reflection and celebration. Of legacy and hope. As I shared the story behind the pages , how I grew up in the village, the trials, triumphs, and defining moments among others,” she explained

“I was also reminded that leadership is never a solitary journey. It is shaped by community, conviction, and courage. History was not only written in ink, but witnessed in unity,” Koome said.
