Kenyans will start to use the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in December next year after the government announced that the project was closer to completion.

“We don’t want to hurriedly launch a project that still has hitches. Currently we are working on some of the infrastructure before we commission the project. This will be a game-changer and as a government we are committed that it must work,” said Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.
Speaking at the climate summit yesterday, the CS said the system will offer incentives to encourage the purchase of electricity-powered engines.

“We are looking for partners who will come on board and give us incentives to purchase some of these buses. We want to lead from the front by having vehicles that support clean energy,” he said.
BRT is expected to offer a reliable mode of commuter transport and decongest Nairobi’s central business district.

It will also ease transport woes, reduce travel time and reduce air pollution.

Murkomen said the government is working with investors and development partners to offer infrastructure sector that is modeled to advantage the majority of the population that use public transport and non-motorised transport.
