Chini chini – Matata ft Mejja

Chini chini – Matata ft Mejja
Chini chini troupe.

I love songs that buck popular sentiment. Chini Chini seeks to do this with its wry lyrics.

‘It’s a Monday, but I’m on a Friday vibe; it is a Tuesday, but I’m on a Friday vibe’ are some of the catchy lyrics in the danceable bop.

This comes as no surprise as the five-member musical group Matata is great at coming up with sticky lyrics.

The song would not be a Matata song if it did not allude to the authentic Kenyan behaviour such as how we revere people who cook githeri on a gas cooker, and how appearances matter so much that we can have nothing at home, but ask for the best meals in town.

As always, Mejja delivers; rapping and dancing with his trademark tumbler in hand. We cannot wait to see which politician quotes him this time.

The video is beautifully shot, with the artistes decked out in creative outfits pulled from the 80s era.

‘Ugali Man’ and dancer and choreographer Ayomar also make cameos in the video, and it’s such a delight to watch them.

The song is currently on repeat as I try to learn the dance routine for the chorus.

That the song is an entire Friday vibe is reason enough for you to check it out. SCORE: 8/10
