Chief Justice to form Bench to hear Sonko’s two cases

By , July 27, 2022

A case filed by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko at the Supreme Court seeking to reverse its decision to uphold his impeachment has been forwarded to the Chief Justice Martha Koome for appointment of judges to hear the matter.

Supreme Court registrar Bernard Kasavuli made the directive yesterday and told the lawyers the hearing date for Sonko’s two applications will be communicated once Koome appoints the Bench.

“The files are referred to the President of the Court to constitute a Bench for hearing of the applications dated July 18 and 20,” Kasavuli said.  The registrar granted Sonko the last opportunity to file his submissions by yesterday 3pm.

The bench will also decide on Sonko’s application for disqualification of the CJ from the case.

Sonko is also seeking to adduce 20 video clips as evidence to convince the top judges to review their decision to uphold his impeachment.

At the same time, the former governor has filed an appeal at the East African Court of Justice challenging the decision of the Supreme Court.

Sonko wants to vie for Mombasa governor seat, but is unable to do so because of the impeachment ruling.
