Cherargei taunts opposition after Ruto–US ties deepen with Washington visit

By , December 6, 2025

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has taken a swipe at the opposition and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua following President William Ruto’s high-profile engagements in the United States.

The Senator has said the warm reception given to the Head of State in Washington has undercut what he termed as an anti-government campaign abroad.

In his remarks posted on X on Saturday, December 6, 2025, the senator criticised the Opposition’s previous claims that international partners were losing confidence in the Kenya Kwanza administration. He singled out Gachagua, who was impeached earlier this year, calling him out for lobbying for sanctions during a past visit to the US.

“This picture should not be seen by impeached deputy president Gachagua and dis-united opposition,” he said.

Cherargei referred to earlier calls allegedly made by Gachagua during a US trip, arguing that the fresh show of cooperation between Nairobi and Washington invalidates those pleas.

“When in the USA, a couple of months ago, Gachagua urged them to impose sanctions on President Ruto, but instead the USA has warmly embraced the Ruto administration. This must give them a heart attack with their hopeless agenda,” he said.

The senator went on to congratulate President Ruto for what he described as significant development gains secured through bilateral engagements with the administration of US President Donald Trump. He suggested the agreements reached during the trip would accelerate Kenya’s long-term growth goals.

“Congratulations, President Ruto, for getting a lot of goodies for development in our country in partnership with the President Trump Administration,” the statement reads.

Cherargei added that the cooperation between the two countries would help Kenya advance toward higher development benchmarks.

“Kenya will really go from third world to the first world in terms of development,” he said.

President Ruto has been in Washington for a series of meetings focused on investment, security, health partnerships, and strengthening bilateral ties. Government officials have framed the visit as a major diplomatic win for Kenya, coming at a time when the administration seeks to consolidate international confidence amid domestic political contestation.
