The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has issued a notice informing the general public on the scheduled fire and emergency drill.
In a statement on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, CBK pointed out that the drill will involve the use of emergency vehicles and alarms on its various premises. Moreover, CBK explained that during the exercise, staff members will congregate outside its banking premises.
CBK, led by Governor Kamau Thugge, expressed confidence that the exercise would not trigger public disruption.
“The drills will involve the use of emergency vehicles, fire alarms and staff members congregating outside bank premises,” the notice read in part.
“It is expected that there will be minimum disruption during the exercise,” CBK further explained.
Where it will take place
The first fire and emergency drill will take place at CBK Head Office in Nairobi on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. A similar drill will take place at their Mombasa Branch on Thursday, May 30, 2024.
At CBK’s Kisumu Branch, the fire and emergency drill will be staged on Thursday, June 13, 2024.
The drills are expected to gauge CBK’s preparedness to handle various emergency situations including fire outbreak or any form of attack. During the exercise, various experts will be invited who also educate CBK staff on some key first aid procedures.

The experts will also equip them with the necessary knowledge on how to handle different emergencies without sparking more public concern.
Key components of the CBK drill include planning, training, exercising, and evaluating. Planning involves forecasting potential emergencies, training involves educating CBK staff about roles and protocols, exercising involves simulated emergency scenarios and evaluating involves post-drill analysis for improvement.
In the country, different agencies and state agencies have adopted the use of drills to prepare their employees in case of emergencies. Malls, shopping centres and sporting facilities are also embracing this new measure to educate the citizens in case of any emergency.
Fire incidences and other forms of insecurities prompted the adoption of drills as a form of mitigation measure in the country. Different government agencies lauded the mechanism as a form of reducing the extent of damages caused by any form of emergency.
