‘CASs appointments have no effect on economy’ – Mwaura

By , July 3, 2023

Chief Administrative Secretaries (CAS) appointee Isaac Mwaura says the appointment of 50 CASs has no effect on the country’s economy.

Speaking on Monday, July 3, 2023, Mwaura, who was appointed as CAS at the office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary (CS), claimed that the cost of living is still high despite the CASs not assuming office, therefore, the positions should not be linked to the lean times Kenyans are enduring.

While emphasising that the court should uphold their appointments, the former nominated senator stated that the whole issue of the cost of living is political.

Maintaining his stance, Mwaura claimed that the appointments are not any different from former president Uhuru Kenyatta’s regime which had 41 CASs and as such the positions should be welcomed.

”The whole issue of associating the CASs’ issue with the cost of living is a political issue… Now that there have been no CASs in office, has the cost of living gone down?” he posed.

The politician further stressed that doing away with the aforementioned positions will not make a significant change to the country’s dwindling economy.

“Even if we do away with these 50 appointments, the cost of living will still be high because there are other factors, these are just 50 people in the framework of a government with over 7000 people,” he added.

Additionally, the politician implored Kenyans to accept ther reality and work towards improving the economy.

Mwaura’s sentiments come as the 50 CASs await the court’s ruling on whether they will assume office or their appointment will be quashed.

The appointments were paused after the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and two other petitioners moved to court. According to the petitioners, the positions were unlawful since the law dictated that the President should only appoint 23 CASs instead of 50.

Consequently, Justice Ong’undi issued orders barring the CASs from assuming office and drawing salaries.
