Canadian mayor donates Ksh245M ladder truck to Siaya County
A Canadian Mayor has donated a ladder truck valued at Ksh254 million to Siaya County, Governor James Orengo has announced.
In a statement on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, Governor Orengo indicated that the Mayor of Taber, a town in Canada, has pledged to donate the truck to help Siaya County upscale its efforts in tackling fire outbreak emergencies.
Besides the ladder truck, Orengo noted that Mayor Andrew Prokop has also pledged to offer Siaya County technical support to establish modern emergency response services.
“The mayor has donated to Siaya County a Ksh245 million ($1.9 million) ladder truck for elevated fire outbreaks. They have also offered to give us technical support on the establishment of modern emergency response services,” Orengo’s statement read in part.
Governor Orengo also engaged with various firefighters from the town and tested some of the trucks used to battle fire outbreak emergencies in that Canadian town.
Before securing a bag of lucrative deals for his county, Orengo engaged the Taber Mayor in a series of issues. Among the areas of conversation included firefighting preparedness, training, modern technology (Fire APP) and having advanced equipment in Siaya County.
“We commenced our visit of the Town of Taber with a tour of the Taber Fire Hall. We were welcomed by the Mayor of Taber, alongside his dedicated team of officers. We discussed a range of issues on firefighting preparedness, training, modern technology (Fire APP) and having advanced equipment in Siaya County.”
The truck is expected to help the county scale its efforts in dealing with fire emergencies.

Twinning plans
Orengo’s deal in Canada comes barely a year after a delegation of the country flew to Siaya County.
During the visit on April 12, 2023, The Chief of Police of Taber Town in Canada Dr. Graham Abela visited Orengo at his office where they discussed the twinning agreement between the Municipal District of Taber and the town of Bondo.
The two leaders emphasised that the twinning agreement would spur tremendous development in Siaya County.
After the meeting, the Chief of Police of Taber Town also made several donations to the vulnerable communities in the region.
