Call for teen mothers rescue centre

By , January 6, 2023

Residents in Nyeri town have asked the National government to establish a rescue centre for teenage mothers.

Speaking during a public participation forum on Wednesday, the residents noted that there are many teenage mothers who need psycho-social support while bringing up their children.

They also observed that the teenage mothers and their children suffer under the care of some family members and hence the need for such a facility.

Reports show that there is an increase of teenage mothers in Nyeri town with some being impregnated by family members with at least 720 teenage pregnancies being reported in the county between January and May last year.  This is according to data released during a sensitisation exercise for over 3,000 residents comprising community health volunteers, youth and national government administrators.  Residents also noted that due to increased cases of drug and substance abuse among the local youth, there is need  to establish a rehabilitation centre to curb the menace.

Nyeri Town MP Duncan Maina who attended the meeting, noted that some of the projects that will be prioritised in the current Financial Year include improvement of learning institutions, security sector, sports facilities, power connection, street lighting and roads.
