Bungoma police seize chang’aa in abandoned car, driver arrested after chase
By Kiprono Keileb, September 21, 2025Police officers in Bungoma County have intensified their crackdown on illicit alcohol, recovering 160 litres of chang’aa after intercepting an abandoned vehicle near Mateka Market on Sunday, September 21, 2025.
According to a statement from the National Police Service (NPS), the discovery was made by officers from Bumula Police Station who were on a routine patrol when they spotted the vehicle stuck in a ditch. A search revealed eight 20-litre jerrycans filled with chang’aa hidden inside the car.
“Today, officers from Bumula Police Station in Bungoma County, while on a routine patrol near Mateka Market, discovered an abandoned vehicle that had veered into a ditch. Upon searching, they recovered 160 litres of illicit brew (chang’aa) concealed in eight 20-litre jerrycans,” police said.

What followed was a dramatic pursuit that led to the arrest of the driver. “Swift action by the officers led to the pursuit and arrest of the vehicle’s driver. The suspect is currently in custody, and the vehicle has been impounded at Bumula Police Station,” the statement added.
Authorities say the latest seizure highlights the growing determination to rid Bungoma and the wider country of harmful illicit brews. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and share information that can help security agencies curb the illegal trade, which continues to destroy lives and livelihoods.
NPS reiterated its commitment to a relentless fight against chang’aa and other outlawed drinks that threaten public health. “This operation underscores the National Police Service’s ongoing efforts to sustain its crackdown by intensifying patrols and working closely with members of the public. This ensures the fight against illicit brews remains effective and relentless,” the service noted.

Illicit alcohol remains a widespread concern across Kenya, often linked to addiction, loss of income, and, in many cases, fatalities. For Bungoma, Sunday’s recovery represents not just a police victory but also a reminder of the risks posed by underground brewers and distributors.
The suspect is expected to face charges once the investigations are complete. Meanwhile, police have assured that more patrols and surprise operations will continue across Bungoma to ensure the community is protected from harmful and unregulated brews.
