Boost for Shabana as Ruto breaks ground for construction of Ksh1B Gusii Stadium
By Kiprono Keileb, April 12, 2026President William Ruto has officially launched the construction of the Ksh1 billion Gusii Stadium in Kisii County, marking a major step in the sports infrastructure across the country.
In a statement shared on X on Sunday, April 12, 2026, Ruto said the project is part of a wider plan aimed at transforming local sporting facilities into modern venues that can host both national and international events while supporting local talent development.
He explained that the redevelopment of Gusii Stadium is designed to raise its standards and give sports personalities a better platform to train and compete, aligning it with global expectations for sports facilities.

“We are rebuilding and expanding Gusii Stadium, giving it a more modern touch that will elevate the facility to global standards,” the statement reads.
The President further outlined that the Gusii Stadium project is not a standalone initiative, but part of a programme targeting the construction and upgrading of multiple sports facilities across the country to support youth development and sports growth.
“This is part of our programme of building world-class sporting infrastructure, including Talanta Sports City Stadium, and delivering 25 new facilities and upgrading existing ones across the country,” the president wrote.
Ruto also emphasised that the government’s long-term vision is to create opportunities for young people to turn their sporting talents into sustainable livelihoods, noting that improved infrastructure plays a key role in nurturing talent and opening economic opportunities.
“Our goal is to create an environment where our sportsmen can thrive and sustainably earn a living from their talents,” he wrote.

The President confirmed that the new stadium will feature a modern design, including a FIFA-standard pitch and an athletics track, positioning it as a key facility for both football and athletics events.
“Broke ground for the construction of the KSh1 billion, 14,000-seater Gusii Stadium, featuring a FIFA standard pitch and an eight-lane track, set for completion in April 2027,” the statement reads.
Shabana FC bus handover
During the visit, Ruto also engaged with the local football community, handing over a new team bus to Shabana FC and joining fans in a friendly match that brought together thousands of supporters in Kisii.

“Also handed over a new bus to Shabana F.C. and later joined thousands of soccer fans to watch a friendly match between Shabana F.C. and Gucha F.C,” the statement reads.
