Activists Boniface Mwangi, Hussein Khalid, and blogger Hanifa Adan have been taken to the Nairobi regional headquarters following their arrests.

The three had presented themselves at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters on Kiambu Road on Monday afternoon June 24, 2024, when they were arrested.

They were later moved from the DCI headquarters to the Nairobi regional headquarters.

The arrest of the trio follows recent demonstrations against the Finance Bill and a spate of abductions targeting protesters.

The former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga and other lawyers, who are representing the trio, have joined them at the command station.

Mutunga denied claims he too had been arrested.

"I can confirm that I have not been arrested. I, and other lawyers are representing Boniface, Khalid, & Adan at the Nairobi Regional Headquarters. Wacheni shuku nuku," the former CJ wrote on X.

Mutunga on abductions

Upon arrival at the DCI, Mutunga briefly addressed the media, condemning the abductions as unconstitutional.

"Abductions are unconstitutional. Police are supposed to comply with human rights," the former Chief Justice asserted.

Mwangi explained their presence at the DCI headquarters, stating they were there to surrender themselves to the police to avoid being abducted.

"We came to hand ourselves to the police because we don't want to be abducted in the streets. Why should we be afraid of living in our country? They want to kill us for expressing our right to dissent. The president wants to dialogue, yet they are abducting us. Right now, Shad is missing. Ask the president, where is Shad?" Mwangi demanded.

Their move comes after the recent abduction of Shad Khalif, who was taken on Sunday night in South B, as captured by CCTV footage circulating online.

Other individuals who have been abducted and later released include Billy Simani, Leslie Muturi, son of Attorney General Justin Muturi, and Austin Omondi.

Abduction condemnation

The abductions have sparked widespread condemnation. Kenya African National Union (KANU) chairman Gideon Moi described the abductions as violent and troubling, asserting that they violate the rule of law.

He insisted that individuals suspected of crimes should be arrested and presented in court as required by law.

The situation remains tense as activists and concerned citizens continue to protest the Finance Bill and demand accountability for the recent abductions.
