Azimio vs Finance Bill 2024

Babu Owino's stand comes hours after the communication director for Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Philip Etale revealed that Azimio legislatures will stand with Kenyans on the Finance Bill 2024.

“The one thing I know, Azimio legislators will stand with Kenyans on the Finance Bill 2024 when the time comes,” he said.

Also on Friday, June 7, 2024, ODM party leader Raila Odinga called for a radicle change on the proposed Finance Bill 2024 which has introduced taxes on basic commodities.

Terming the Bill worse than the previous one, Raila said that if passed it would burden the poor Kenyans who had hoped that the government would lessen the tax in the 2024 Finance Bill.

”It is worse than the one of 2023 it's an investment killer and a huge millstone around the neck of millions of poor Kenyans who had hoped that the tears they shed last year would see the government lessen their tax burden,” he said.

The Azimio leader also noted that the introduction of the tax on bread and edible oil would affect common mwananchi.

“Bread is set to be taxed at 16 per cent from the current zero rate status, 25 per cent excise duty tax on edible oil cost of cooked food including those served in kibanda and kiosks that are a refugee of many causal workers will rise," he said.
