Azimio to sue gov’t over Nairobi demolitions – Kalonzo
Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition will take legal action against the government of the recent demolitions in Nairobi, Wiper Movement party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has said.
Taking to his official X account on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, the Azimio co-principal said they will also push to have all the victims of the demolitions compensated.
Kalonzo made the statement moments after meeting the leadership of the Nairobi Handcraft Industries and Co-operative Societies at the Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka (SKM) Command Centre, which briefed the Raila Odinga-led political faction on the demolitions.
"Earlier today, the leadership of The Nairobi Handcraft Industries and Co-operative Societies briefed Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party leaders at the SKM Command Centre on the recent government demolitions in Nairobi," Kalonzo stated.
Justice for demolition victims
Kalonzo noted that the legal action to be taken against the Kenya Kwanza government will be on behalf of the Kenyans whose businesses and livelihoods were affected by the Nairobi demolitions.
"As Azimio, we have pledged to take legal action against the Kenya Kwanza regime on behalf of all Kenyans whose businesses and livelihoods were devastated by the senseless and brutal conduct. We will seek prompt compensation for all affected parties," Kalonzo added.

On May 3, 2024, Raila hit out at the President William Ruto-led government over the demolition of houses in the Mukuru Kwa Njenga slum.
Raila on demolitions
Raila who spoke while distributing relief food to flood victims in Embakasi South said it was wrong for the government to demolish houses before giving Mukuru Kwa Njenga residents alternative solutions for the victims.
"These people should not demolish houses in Mukuru kwa Njenga, if they try to do so call us. If they want to relocate people, first they should build good houses for them before demolishing them. There is no need to demolish people's homes when there is no place for them to go, citizens are not animals,” Raila stated.
Following the floods that were caused by the heavy rainfall that was experienced in the country in the months of April and May, President Ruto issued evacuation orders to all people living in riparian lands and flood-prone areas.
The head of state gave a 48-hour ultimatum to the people before it swung into action in collaboration with the Nairobi City County government.
The demolitions affected the people of Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums in Embakasi South and Mathare.
Apart from losing property, some lives were lost in the demolition process especially in Mathare, as some of the buildings under demolition collapsed with people scavenging for scrap metals inside.
