Avoid toxic Athi River water, villagers told

By , August 23, 2022

People living downstream of River Athi in Machakos County have been advised against consuming water from the river.

Deputy Governor-Elect Francis Mwangangi says the water contains dangerous toxins from counties such as Kiambu, Nairobi and Kajiado.

Speaking in Ikalaasa village in Mwala constituency, Mwangangi told thousands of residents of Matungulu, Mwala and Yatta sub-counties to source domestic water from other seasonal rivers and boreholes.

“When I was the MP for Yatta between 2013 and 2017, I led a parliamentary committee on environment which recommended clean-up of the river, but in vain,” he added.

Mwangangi and Wavinya are expected take the oath of office this Thursday.
