Kenya Railways Corporation over the weekend announced that the commuter train will commence operations on Monday to Athi River as it also released the train schedule and the payment fees.

The city’s commuter rail service was introduced in May 1992 in response to a series of strikes by PSVs. With time, the demand plummeted due to poor management.

However, two weeks ago President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the Nairobi Commuter Rail Services, which targets three million travellers a month compared to the current 1.2 million.

Kenya Railways targets a daily commute to the CBD of 1.5 million people.

Last week, the authorities released the official Nairobi Commuter Train complete schedule, having trains operating on a fixed daily schedule across Nairobi, at a fixed cost of Sh100.

The train services cover the Nairobi-Imara Daima-Syokimau route, the Nairobi-Githurai-Mwiki-Kahawa–Ruiru route, the Nairobi-Embakasi route and the Nairobi-Kibera–Kikuyu route.

Uhuru also announced that the commuter rail services will be extended to  JKIA in 2021.
