Arrest warrant issued for ex-Kisumu Speaker

By , March 23, 2021

Am anti-corruption court yesterday issued a warrant of arrest against former Kisumu County Assembly Speaker Onyango Oloo.

The move came after Oloo failed to appear in court in the Sh2.5 billion Lake Basin Development Authority’s mall scandal case to plead to 11 new charges.

Milimani Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti issued the arrest order against the former Speaker and ordered him to appear in court on May 2 to plead to fresh charges.

The order comes after the Director of Public Prosecutions through senior State counsel James Kihara made an application to issue a warrant of arrest against Oloo and his lawyer who were not present in the open court.

Oloo is accused of conspiring with contractors to defraud the public billions of shillings in the tendering for the construction of the LBDA mall in Kisumu county.

Meanwhile, the DPP has dropped charges against 14 suspects in the case after they agreed to testify as State witnesses.

Kihara informed the court that his boss Noordin Haji had given the nod to have the charges against  the14 suspects dropped.

“Haji has reviewed the evidence on record and he has given formal instructions to withdraw 14 accused persons and make them State witnesses,” Kihara told the court.

Those whose charges have been dropped include Anthony Kiprop, David Nyapida, John Nyera, John Collins Onyango, Bonface Orori, William Bill Omoding, Jimmy Wapngana Nabwega and Alex Jimmy Mukabwa.
