Apologise to Kilifi Woman Rep, LSK tells Parliament

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has demanded that Parliament apologises to Kilifi Woman Representative, Zulekha Hassan, who was kicked out for attending proceedings with her five-month-old child.

Saying all employers should provide safe workspaces that embrace and support breastfeeding mothers who work, LSK told Parliament to lead by example.

LSK President, Allen Gichuhi said Parliament should provide a conducive work environment for breastfeeding staff, have facilities for their comfort as by law required, to include but not limited to lactation centres.

“The government should provide policy directives to government entities and all employers to ensure compliance with the law and protection of the various mentioned rights by not only having the facilities but by ensuring that the facilities are fully functional,” said Gichuhi in a statement on Friday.

Terming what befell Zulekha as archaic, Gichuhi said it was grossly unfair and discriminatory to the MP but also to the child.
