Anxious wait for JSS guide ahead of new term

Parents are anxiously waiting for the Junior Secondary School (JSS) guidelines, which will provide a transition roadmap, as they prepare for the 2023 academic year.
Already, the Government has resolved to domicile Grades 7, 8 and 9 in primary schools. Also, it is expected to give clear direction on the transition of the pioneer Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) Grade Six class by the end of the week.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu formed a multi-agency committee to draft guidelines that will guide the transition, which will soon be released to the public.
“The committee is expected to draft guidelines that will effectively ensure a seamless transition from primary school Grade 6 to Junior Secondary School,” the CS stated.
The team is also expected to facilitate effective leadership and management of JSS, and promote consistency in implementation of JSS curriculum, including teaching, and learning and assessment.
Also, it is to advice on the provision of adequate, appropriate and safe infrastructure and a learner-friendly environment for all learners ,including those with Special Needs and Disabilities.
Machogu also directed the team to ensure provision of adequate and well prepared human resources to facilitate curriculum delivery for JSS as well as outline roles of key stakeholders in the implementation of the various components of JSS.
Last year, the Government stated that the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), which Grade Six class sat concurrently with the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), will not be used to place them to JSS.
But he KPSEA report will be part of the process of monitoring of learner progress.
The Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr David Njengere said KPSEA reports for Grade Six learners will be available by June 16.
They will get individual learner reports that will indicate their performance level in specific subjects.
Currently, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is in the process of recruiting teachers 30, 550 teachers.
