Angelique Kidjo wins fourth Grammy award
Beninese singer-songwriter, actress, and activist Angélique Kidjo won Best World Music Album for her album Celia at the 62nd GRAMMY Awards.
This marks Kidjo fourth win in the category and fourth Grammy win overall.
When giving her acceptance speech she recognised a new generation of African artiste including Burna Boy coming up and representing the continent, she also thanked luminaries who came before for their contributions to the world music.
“Four years ago on this stage, I was telling you that the new generations of artists coming from Africa going to take you by storm and the time has come,” Kidjo said.
“Celia Cruz, for me she’s the goddess of salsa. She’s the queen of salsa. She is one of those artists that taught me at a young age that my gender cannot define who I am, that I can do everything I wanted to do.”
Kidjo beat out fellow nominees Altin Gün (Gece), Bokanté & Metropole Orkest Conducted By Jules Buckley (What Heat), Burna Boy (African Giant) and Nathalie Joachim With Spektral Quartet (Fanm D’Ayiti).
She also performed the song “Afrika” during the Premiere Ceremony.Kidjo remains one of the continent’s most decorated winners at the Grammys and other awards.
The 19-year-old Mikayla Simpson, popularly known as Koffee was also among those whp0 won the grammys last night. The rising reggae star snagged the Grammy award for “Best Reggae Album” for her “Rapture” EP .
