Former Kenyan International Boniface Ambani has highlighted several issues that, in his opinion, have contributed to AFC Leopards' ongoing struggles in the league.

As of now, AFC Leopards are positioned 17th in the league standings and are yet to secure victory this season.

AFC Leopards lacking strong leadership

Ambani believes that one of the key problems the club faces is a lack of strong leadership, coupled with a compromise in standards.

He pointed out that the issues affecting the club extend from its management, from the top levels to the branch levels.

He emphasized the need for strong and uncompromising leadership, citing a decline in the club's standards.

Ambani also expressed concerns about the high turnover of coaches and players within the club and suggested that the recurring fines imposed on the club by FIFA are avoidable and man-made.

"What is ailing this club, trickles down to management of the club from the top levels to the branch levels. You need to be a very strong leader to handle this club. No nonsense. You don't have to compromise with Standards. Standards at this club have been compromised. The turnover of coaches and players in the club is wanting. The fines levelled to the club by FIFA can't make this club move even an inch, and to me, it's man-made," he said in a statement on his Facebook.

Ambani also criticized the club for consistently making mediocre player signings, especially among foreign players. He noted that this issue has not been openly addressed, even by AFC Leopards legends

"Signing mediocre players left to right has become the norm of the club and especially foreigners. Nobody wants to address this openly. Even the so-called AFC Leopards Legends are very quiet about it. Tell me how many AFC Leopards players play in the current National team? How many have even received the national team call-up alone? Speaks volumes," he pointed out.

Furthermore, Ambani questioned the club's lack of organizational structures and policies, as well as the fans' unrealistic expectations for constant success.

AFC Leopards quality

He urged fans and stakeholders to acknowledge that winning requires a well-defined process and the recruitment of quality players. Ambani questioned the quality of players at the club, the process of signing players, and the club's scouting efforts.

"The club has no well-laid-in structures to run the club. No well-set-up policies. There is no proper transparency, and accountability of anything. Integrity supersedes everything. Nobody is addressing this. Not even the fans themselves. All they want to see is the team winning. Winning doesn't just fall from the clouds. Before it rains, it takes a process. A long one. So how do you want to win? What's the quality of players that we have in the club? Who signs these players? Who scouts for Leopards? The team can't sing quality, why? Hard questions you are evading and running away from," he added

Regarding AFC Leopards' recent FIFA bans, Ambani revealed that the team did not have a proper preseason training session because many players had left, leaving the team struggling to sign replacements.

He called for a thorough self-assessment by AFC Leopards fans and urged them to ask difficult questions before criticizing the club's coaches.

"FIFA ban. Did you know this team didn't even go for preseason training coz a good number of the players left. The team was left grappling on who to sign and when? They couldn't compete to get the best in the market. Let's sit down as AFC Leopards fans and ask ourselves hard questions, before you slaughter Trucha again...the way you just did to Tom Juma," he noted

Ambani also mentioned his personal involvement with AFC Leopards, including his unsuccessful bid for the club's chairmanship. He explained that he was prevented from running for the position due to opposition from certain forces within Kenyan football and the club itself, with the pretext of his age.

"I have been at AFC Leopards as a fan when I was still a kid, and I am still one to date. Later on, I went on to play for the club, left, continued supporting the club, and came back to the club as a coach of the junior side, the one christened The Leopards Cubs," he revealed.

"I later stepped out of being the Cubs' gaffer and threw myself into campaigning for the chairmanship position. Some forces behind the Kenyan football and the club made sure I didn't get to the ballot box. They made sure I got locked out of it with the pretext that I was young, I should leave it to Shikanda," he added.

"This pressure also came from AFC Leopards Legends. I told them, I might be young, yes but with the brains I have in football, and my international exposure, I knew what I wanted. I knew what I wanted to fix in this club once and for all. Many of my fans got worked up, they never showed up during the voting day. I went to court to stop elections, but later on the courts as usual decided otherwise—story for another day," he pointed out.

"Lastly, the Luhya community, unite. Those subtribes in your branches are another cancer in this club. Fight it. Unite for a common purpose. You know," he concluded.
