AK: Vote in large numbers for Kenyan athletes

By , October 20, 2019

Athletics Kenya (AK) has called on Kenyans to show patriotism and vote for their own who have been nominated for the prestigious IAAF World Athlete of the Year Awards.

World marathon record holders Eliud Kipchoge, who won the 2019 London Marathon before his historic 1:59.40 mark in Vienna last weekend and Brigid Kosgei, who lowered Paula Radcliffe’s 16-year record in Chicago last Sunday, lead are among five Kenyan men and women on the provisional list which will be whittled down to the final five in each category next month.

World 1,500m champion Timothy Cheruiyot joins Kipchoge in the men’s provisional list of 11 while world 3,000m steeplechase champion Beatrice Chepkoech and Hellen Obiri, who defended her world title in Doha, are on the women’s list alongside Kosgei.

With voting taking place online, AK wants Kenyans to vote for the country’s athletes en mass.

“I was in Vienna to witness Kipchoge make history. We want to reiterate how proud we are of our athletes. The kind of marketing they give us is immeasurable,” said AK boss Jack Tuwei.

He added: “This is the time to give back as Kenyans. We have top vote in large numbers so that our nominees can stand a chance of winning the awards. Tell a friend to tell a friend.”

The IAAF Council and the IAAF Family will cast their votes by email, while fans can vote online via the IAAF’s social media platforms.
