Agency partners with varsity to fight graft

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has partnered with Moi University in the fight against corruption and curb the widespread fake degree menace in the education sector.

According to the North Rift EACC Deputy Director Japheth Baithalu, EACC is to scrutinize the financial management systems, policies and operational procedures of the university and seal loopholes to empower the institution to sustain its operations without serious fiscal challenges.

“We aim to establish strategies that will empower the university to prevent corruption and tackle the threat of fake degrees that have bedeviled the higher education of learning,” said Baithalu during the launch of a  systems review, exercise at the institution yesterday.

The commission has issued a circular petitioning  the university management to jointly find a lasting solution to fake certificates and duplication of degrees’ menace.

“Measures should be put in place to strengthen and make the verification system foolproof and have a lasting solution on how these vices can be stopped,” appealed Abdi Mohamud, EACC Deputy Chief Executive Officer in the circular.

Quality services

Commission Deputy Director Preventions Neheema Mkorori said the programme comprises system review in all departments.

Moi University Vice Chancellor Prof Isaac Kosgey expressed willingness by the institution to partner with other government agencies on how to improve its systems to enhance delivery of quality services.

The university’s council chairman Dr Humphrey Njuguna called for concerted effort in the fight against fake degree menace noting that it compromises the merits of higher education.
