Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Commissioner General Adan Abdulla Mohammed has officially been sworn into office.

Mohammed was sworn in during a ceremony held at the Supreme Court of Kenya on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.

According to KRA, Adan assumes leadership of the tax agency at a pivotal moment as it continues to strengthen its role in supporting business growth, enhancing compliance, and creating a more enabling environment for enterprises across Kenya.

“Kenya Revenue Authority Commissioner General Adan Abdulla Mohammed has officially been sworn into office during a ceremony held at the Supreme Court of Kenya,” KRA stated.

“Adan assumes leadership of the tax authority at a pivotal moment as Kenya Revenue Authority continues to strengthen its role in supporting business growth, enhancing compliance, and creating a more enabling environment for enterprises across Kenya.”

This comes after his appointment by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Board as the substantive Commissioner General.

In a statement signed by KRA Board Chairman Ndiriitu Muriithi on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, the board said the appointment followed a competitive recruitment process and formed part of its ongoing programme aimed at strengthening institutional leadership, accelerating revenue mobilisation, and deepening taxpayer trust.

According to the KRA Board, the new commissioner general brings with him a depth of experience and strategic insight required to lead the institution through its next phase of transformation.

Who is Adan

Mohamed joined KRA with over three decades of leadership experience spanning the financial services sector, management consulting, public service, and corporate governance.

He also served as Cabinet Secretary for Industrialisation, Trade and Cooperatives between 2013 and 2018 and later as Cabinet Secretary for the East African Community and Regional Development.

Before entering public service, he served as chief administrative officer for Barclays Africa, overseeing 10 Barclays Bank subsidiaries across the continent.

Earlier roles included chief executive officer of Barclays Kenya for over a decade and managing director of Barclays East and West Africa.

His professional career began at PricewaterhouseCoopers in London, where he was trained as a chartered accountant, followed by work in management consultancy and business advisory services. Early consulting experience also included a three-year posting at Shell in Nigeria.

He also holds membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).

Academic qualifications

He holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School and a first-class honours degree in commerce (accounting option) from the University of Nairobi. Secondary education was completed at Kangaru High School in Embu, while early schooling was undertaken at Elwak Primary School in Mandera County, where birth took place.
