Activist Boniface Mwangi announces presidential bid

Activist Boniface Mwangi has announced his bid for the presidency in the 2027 general election.

Speaking at Ufungamano House on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, Mwangi, who described himself as a father and a patriot, stated that his vision is driven by a desire to better the country as a long-serving patriot.

“I have chosen this day to announce that I will be running for the president of the Republic of Kenya,” he affirmed. “I am a husband, a father, and a patriot of Kenya, and like most of you, I love this country deeply.” Mwangi, who was born to a low-income mother, who later moved to Nairobi’s suburb of Ngara said.

Mwangi emphasised the need to address governance and economic issues that have plagued the country.

“Friends, our country is broken and in danger of becoming a failed state. Nothing is working. A vast majority are struggling with the crippling high cost of living, and taxes are choking us to death. “How much longer are we going to tighten our belts?” he posed.

He also took a swipe at the country’s political class and specifically singled out President William Ruto for overseeing widespread corruption and disregard for the rule of law.

Onslaught on president and parliament

“Our political class is the highest paid but can’t keep their hands out of the coffers. Today, 83,300 Kenyans own 99% of this country… Our president treats the Constitution like tissue paper. He flouts the law, disobeys court orders, and undermines the constitution.”

Mwangi’s announcement coincides with President Ruto’s recent declaration of “Katiba Day” on August 25. His entrance in the race adds to a list that already has figures that include Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, former CS Fred Matiang’i, and retired Chief Justice David Maraga, among others.

Mwangi in Politics

The announcement marks Mwangi’s return to politics after an unsuccessful attempt in the 2017 elections, where he contested the parliamentary elections in Nairobi’s Starehe Constituency in the 2017 general elections.

During the elections, Mwangi came third after losing to Charles Njagua, popularly known as Jaguar of the Jubilee Party.

Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) Steve Mbogo came in second.

After losing the polls, he announced in August 2021 that he was quitting politics for good.

“There are many of you who think I should run again, but I will not vie again in the next year’s election. It’s very sad that in this country, qualification for a public office is not ideas, vision, passion or love. For you to become elected in this country, you need money, which can be very dirty money, you need a criminal record. So if you rape, murder, and loot, and you have a bad reputation, you qualify for public office,” he claimed in a video updated in his socal media page then.
