‘Mission possible’ – Harambee Starlets declare ahead of clash with Botswana
National women’s football team Harambee Starlets remain upbeat of qualifying to the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations despite drawing at home last Wednesday against Botwasana.
The team left the country yesterday 5AM for Gaborone where they are set to go to war again tomorrow afternoon in a do or die duel.
After coming from behind to salvage a 1-1 draw at a packed Nyayo Stadium,Harambee Starlets has some job to do on away soil to save its journey to continental showpiece in Morocco next year.
Kenya has to get at least a 1-1 in Gaborone to force the game to be untied by penalties. The other route is for the home girls to force a draw of two or more goals to qualify on away goal rules. The other option is simply to win the match.
Coach Beldine Odemba says the Kenyan football queens are up to the task and will overcome Botswana’s frustrations.
“The girls are in superb shape,we have taken major steps in training since the last outing, drawing at home was disturbing but all is not lost,we have another 90 minutes to fight.I am sure the girls are ready and we will overturn the result to make it to the Africa Cup of Nations,” Odemba remarked.
Slavia Praha midfielder Marjolen Nekesa acknowledged that their opponents were a good side though noting Kenya has a better team. She further says the team is in good mood ready to get the needed victory tomorrow.
“The team is looking good; the preparations have been going on well. We have been keen to amend the mistakes we made in our previous game and we are ready to get good results in Botswana. From the way they (Botwasana) played you can tell it was a good side but I think we are a better team, it was just not our day and I am positive of getting desired outcome there,” Nekesa told People Sport.
