CS Duale breaks ground with 788 houses for KDF soldiers

Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has initiated the plan to address military housing shortages by inaugurating a new project.

CS Duale has broken ground for the construction of 788 housing units to alleviate the accommodation shortage in Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in Laikipia County.

According to the CS, the new houses will be constructed in the Kwa Mbuzi area of Laikipia County.

Full ambitious housing plan

Speaking during the launch, CS Duale noted that President William Ruto's administration is keen to build over 3,000 housing units across the country.

While explaining the plan, Duale painted a grim picture revealing that a shortfall of 33,400 married quarters and 25,800 single quarters.

“This new development in Laikipia is a crucial part of a broader plan, which includes the construction of 3,069 housing units across five regions. On May 18, 2024, I commissioned the construction of 952 units in Nakuru County,” Duale stated.

Duale detailed that the new ambitious housing project will be implemented through a strategic Public-Private Partnership (PPP), combining the strengths of both sectors to deliver high-quality housing solutions efficiently.

“By fostering collaborative efforts and forming strong partnerships, the government aims to provide sustainable and supportive living environments for its defence personnel,” Duale emphasised.

The KDF PPP Housing Project, a collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and private sector partners, is set to deliver 3,069 housing units across five regions: Lanet (952), Gilgil (697), Nanyuki (788), Mariakani (152), and Nairobi (500).

Nakuru housing project

On May 19, 2024, the CS also launched another housing project for servicemen in Lanet, Nakuru. During the groundbreaking ceremony, Duale highlighted that the project will provide modern and affordable housing for military personnel.

“The Ministry acknowledges the pressing housing shortage faced by our servicemen and women. We are actively collaborating with the State Department of Housing to develop 25,000 institutional housing units. This initiative includes the establishment of new barracks in Marsabit and Turkana Counties, as well as the construction of housing units in various barracks nationwide,” he remarked.
