President William Ruto has announced that over 70,000 affordable housing units are nearing completion across the country.

Ruto spoke when he visited Mukuru Met Social Housing Project in Mukuru, Nairobi County, where over 14,000 units are nearing completion.

"The Affordable Housing Project is on course. So far, 70,000 units are at advanced stages of construction across the country," Ruto stated.

"Besides addressing the housing gap faced by the growing urban low-income population, this progressive project also presents huge opportunities for gainful employment to millions of our youth struggling to earn a living and entrepreneurs."

Affordable Housing Levy

This comes weeks after the government introduced the Housing Levy through the Finance Act 2023, which will see employees contribute 1.5 per cent of their salaries towards the government's Affordable Housing Project.

As of June 30, at least 367,000 Kenyans had registered with the government's Affordable Housing project dubbed Boma Yangu, StateHouse Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said.

In a statement in June, Mohamed, however, said that only 33,000 are active savers with 10,538 Kenyans saving a cumulative of Ksh17 billion for the Affordable Housing project as of Thursday, June 29, 2023.

He said there is space for 160,000 Kenyans who still want to be homeowners through the government's project.
