7 million mothers have benefitted from Linda Mama
By George Kebaso, August 16, 2024Over seven million expectant mothers have benefitted from the Linda Mama programme since its inception in 2013, the Social Health Authority (SHA) says.
Consequently, acting Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Elijah Wachira has called on mothers and those expecting to continue accessing essential services at the nearest healthcare facility.
“Since the programme was launched more than a decade ago, Linda Mama, now under SHA has provided maternal care to 7.5 million mothers, leading to a significant reduction in maternal and infant mortality rates,” he said yesterday even as the Court of Appeal stayed its ruling last month, declaring the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) unlawful.
Data with SHA shows that in the last financial year, 1 million mothers benefited from the programme, with over 70 percent of deliveries in public healthcare facilities.
“Social Health Authority is proud to announce the continued success of the Linda Mama Programme,” he stated, outlining what the authority will do to ensure the programme’s continuity.
SHA, Wachira noted, will cover expectant mothers under the maternity package by providing care during their pregnancy and delivery, and in case of complications mother and baby will be cared for. The Authority will also take care of Mother and baby after delivery.
“Under SHA, we will ensure mothers get enhanced benefits seamlessly under the management of the Social Health Authority,” he stated, also announcing a re-energised programme to implement the Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
However, Wachira emphasised that the Authority’s effectiveness will depend on its ability to implement its set out long, mid- and short-term strategies, managing resources wisely, and strengthening stakeholder engagement.
“Overall, SHA marks a substantial advancement and crucial step towards achieving UHC in Kenya,” he said.
