4 members of a machete-wielding gang arrested after shocking Kwale attack

Police in Mbuwani village in Kwale County have arrested four persons of interest in connection with robbery with violence. The suspects are believed to be members of a criminal gang dubbed “Panga Boys”.

Taking it to their X handle on Friday, February 6, 2026, the National Police Service confirmed the arrests, saying that the arrests followed a series of attacks reported in the area.

NPS further noted a specific case that was reported to the police on the night of January 22, 2026, in which a resident of the village reported having been attacked by a gang of men armed with machetes.

“Officers from the National Police Service today arrested four suspects believed to be members of the notorious “Panga Boys” organised gang. The suspects were apprehended at their hideout in Mbuwani Village, Kwale County. This followed a robbery with violence incident reported on the night of 22 January 2026, in which a resident of the village was attacked by the four assailants, who were armed with pangas,” the NPS statement read in part.

The statement from NPS added that the resident reported having been assaulted and sustained serious injuries to his head and hand before fleeing.

“They robbed him of his mobile phone and inflicted serious injuries by cutting him on the head and hand before fleeing the scene,” NPS added.

In the raid, police recovered four machetes that were believed to have been used in the attack, as well as six suspected stolen mobile phones.

The National Police Service has said the service continues to intensify security operations and efforts to dismantle criminal gangs and curb violent crime in the area.

NPS has added that they will remain on high alert, sustaining proactive operations to curb insecurity. The service has also affirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting the lives and property of all.

Cases of robbery violence have been on the rise, where the suspected gang members are using pangas to terrorise members of the public, and the police service has called on the members of the public to be cautious and report to the police in such cases.
