At least 10 people died after a bus carrying mourners crashed at the Josa area on Wundanyi-Mwatate road in Taita Taveta County on Saturday, April 14.

Confirming the Saturday night accident, Mwatate sub-county police commander Morris Okul said the mourners were traveling to Mombasa after attending a funeral in Mghambonyi.

“The brakes of the bus failed while descending down a slope at Josa area. The injured have been taken to different hospitals in Mwatate and Voi for treatment,” Okul said.

The exact number of passengers who were in the bus during the accident had not been fully confirmed by the time of publishing this story.

Bodies of those who succumbed were taken to Moi County Referral Hospital morgue in Voi.

Okul said police have begun investigations into the accident and urged drivers who are not familiar with the route to be more careful and avoid overspeeding.
