10 more dead as Rotavirus sweeps through Mombasa
At least 10 people have died from Rotavirus infection in Mombasa since its outbreak was reported in the county on April 11.
Releasing the report during a joint media briefing with county officials, Kenya Red Cross Mombasa chairman Mohamed Mahmoud (pictured) reported that out of the 10 deaths, three are from Kisauni, two from Nyali and one from Likoni.
Mahmoud said the other four people who succumbed to the disease are unaccounted for due to incomplete data in terms of where they come from.
Contagious virus
Rotavirus is a contagious virus that causes diarrhoea mostly in children under the age of five.
The cases are said to have originated from a daycare centre in Mshomoroni, Kisauni, where most cases have been reported.
Mahmoud made the remarks during a joint media briefing with Mombasa County Public Service Administration Chief Executive Kenneth Ambani.
On his part, Ambani affirmed the county’s commitment to counter the deadly disease.
He reported that 22 houses in Miritini Madukani, Burukenge, Kipevu and Chaani area have been damaged by flash floods.
County is now setting up emergency centres to rehabilitate people affected by the floods.
Yesterday, Kenya Red Cross appealed for support to provide food and water supplies and medical supplies.
