10 appointments CS Ogamba has made to key education boards
By Sharon Atieno, July 20, 2026Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba has made 10 appointments to the governing councils of two key education institutions, with nine members reappointed and one new member appointed.
In a gazette notice dated Friday, July 17, the changes affect the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Curriculum Development, Assessment and Certification Council (TVET Council) and the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) Governing Council.
Seven changes at TVET Council
Ahmed Ferej has been reappointed as the non-executive chairperson of the TVET Council.
Mercy Mwaniki, Loice Yator, Rachel Kimani, Florence Suji, Wambua Nyamai and Joseph Kaberia Arimba have also been reappointed as members of the council.
Three changes at KICD
At the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, Andrew Rasugu Otachi Riechi and Kibiwott Munge have been reappointed to the Governing Council.
Margaret Njaggah has been appointed as a new member.
The appointments come as the government continues to implement changes in the education sector amid concerns over curriculum delivery, technical training and student welfare.
Changes amid education sector reforms
The latest changes also come against the backdrop of wider adjustments in the education sector after President William Ruto reassigned former Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok to the State Department for Tourism in June.
John Lekakeny Ololtuaa was moved from the State Department for Tourism to take charge of the Basic Education docket.
The changes came amid a wave of student unrest and school fires reported in different parts of the country, with the government linking some of the tensions to examination pressure.
Before his reassignment, Bitok called for a review of school assessment practices and urged schools to reconsider the timing of some examinations.
“There are some of the mock examinations which are creating tension in our schools. We have asked the boards of management and the school management to reconsider, even postponing the mock exams temporarily to ensure that students do not riot,” Bitok said.
The latest appointments are expected to influence the direction of curriculum development, assessment and technical training as the government continues with reforms in the education sector.
