Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir has lauded the nomination of his predecessor Ali Hassan Joho to President William Ruto’s Cabinet to serve in the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs.

In a statement on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, the incumbent Mombasa Governor Nassir praised Joho indicating that he will succeed if approved by the Committee on Appointment.

According to the governor, under Joho’s leadership the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs is expected to undergo tremendous transformation due to his acumen.

“On behalf of the people of Mombasa, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to Hassan Ali Joho on your nomination as Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs in the Government of Kenya.

“Your dedication, leadership, and vision have been recognized, and we have no doubt that you will excel in your new role upon confirmation by the National Assembly,” part of Nassir’s statement read.

Nassir who is a close ally of the former Mombasa Governor Joho further wished him success in his bid to serve the country as a Cabinet Secretary.

“Your passion for public service and your ability to bring positive change will undoubtedly make a significant impact. Congratulations once again, and may your tenure as Waziri be filled with success and fulfilment.”

ODM leaders nominated

Joho joined a list of other leaders drawn from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) nominated to the cabinet by President William Ruto.

Despite disagreements within Azimio, ODM has reaped big in the Ruto’s broad-based cabinet list.

Notable names from the Opposition Party nominated to Cabinet include John Mbadi (National Treasury and Economic Planning), James Opiyo Wandayi (Ministry of Energy and Petroleum) and Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya (Ministry of Co-operatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development).

This comes a day after ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna stated that the party is not negotiating with the Kenya Kwanza government for any coalition or political arrangement but focusing on a national conversation for a better Kenya.

The party warned its members against making themselves available for Cabinet appointments, in an announcement that has added confusion in ODM’s plans to work with the government under the proposed ‘broad-based government’.

“The ODM Party remains committed to its principles and the ongoing struggle for a better Kenya. We will continue to stand with the people and fight for the justice and reforms our nation desperately needs,” he said.

However, Sifuna’s statement was dismissed by Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma who threatened to push for the ouster of Sifuna for contradicting the party’s stand.
