Nakuru County Governor Susan Kihika has praised outgoing US Ambassador Meg Whitman, who resigned from her post on Wednesday, November 13, 2024.
In her defence of Whitman, the former Senator said that the US representative marketed Kenya vigorously and that she was passionate about impacting lives positively.
“Truly sorry to see Ambassador Meg Whitman leave. Say what you may, but she truly loved Kenya and marketed it like no one else could or ever did, especially in matters of trade.
“For those like myself who worked closely with her, she was a passionate and positive force in helping us impact the lives of our communities,” Kihika said in a Thursday, November 14, 2024 post on her X handle.
Although Whitman faced criticism from Kenyans who felt she meddled in the internal matters of the country too much, Kihika said she will be missed.
“You will be greatly missed!” the governor added.
Whitman’s lists progress
In her resignation statement, Whitman listed what she believed were achievements made while she was in charge of the US Embassy.
“My efforts also opened the door for more American companies to do business in Kenya. When I arrived in 2022, I focused on expanding these ties with my ‘Why Africa, Why Kenya?’ presentation to American companies and entrepreneurs. Trade, jobs, and U.S. investment in Kenya are at historic highs because of our efforts.
“We also responded to the skyrocketing demand for our consular services, reducing wait times for non-immigrant visa appointments from more than two years to about two months, among other enhancements,” she said.
As Whitman leaves the US Gigiri-based facility, eyes will be on President Donald Trump’s choice as the next ambassador.
Whitman was appointed by Joe Biden, and she served at times when the country faced challenges; the Gen Z protests, cases of abduction, and immense criticism of the government of the day.
