Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organisation (MYWO) yesterday lauded women elected to various political seats in the General Election, saying it is a significant move for the country.
MYWO chairperson, Rahab Muiu said there has been a significant improvement in women’s representation in both Houses of Parliament compared to the 2017 elections, a step they said is commendable and in the right direction.
“Our message today is to most sincerely congratulate all women who have been elected as Governors (7) from three in the last elections, three Senators, MPs in single constituencies (26) up from 23, 47 Woman Representatives and not forgetting Members of the County Assembly,” said Muiu, who spoke from MYWO offices in Nairobi.
Elected Governors are Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Susan Kihika (Nakuru), Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay), Cecily Mbarire (Embu), Kawira Mwangaza (Meru), Fatuma Achani (Kwale) and Wavinya Ndeti (Machakos).
She also commended the courage, determination and resilience of all women who vied for elective positions saying that a strong social and political capital has been built, which will further be enhanced in the future.
Muiu said MYWO has been around the country during its 70 years of celebrations and advocated for the election of women.
