Makueni governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior has faulted former Attorney General Githu Muigai over his fierce exchange with lawyer John Khaminwa.

Taking to his official X account on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, the former Makueni senator stated that Githu Muigai must have been daring to have an exchange with Khaminwa in court during the hearing of Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment case.

Mutula argued that Khaminwa is a senior of many seniors, including senior counsels.

According to Mutula, respect for age is an old tradition and no titles can take it away.

The Makueni county chief who is also a lawyer by profession went ahead to claim that there is no one that can challenge Khaminwa’s practice on the bar at the moment.

“Senior Counsel Githu Muigai is daring! Dr Khaminwa is a senior of many including senior counsels. Seniority in this respect is an old tradition and no titles can take that away. I don’t know anyone who can challenge his practice on the BAR at the moment,” Mutula stated.

Khaminwa-Muigai exchange

An exchange ensued when Khaminwa hit out at Githu Muigai after the former AG stood to interrupt him when he was still speaking.

Khaminwa told Muigai that he started his career when Muigai was still breastfeeding.

Khaminwa, who was addressing a three-bench judge hearing considering petitions arising from Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment as deputy president, had declined to take his seat as requested by Muigai.

“I will not sit down. I started practising law when you were breastfeeding,” Khaminwa said.

“Let us not let people call themselves professors or senior counsel; titles which do not mean anything.”

Khaminwa was protesting the time the court had allocated to the petitioner and respondents to speak.

“Let Paul Muite be given as much time as he wants, let Githu Muigai be given as much time. That is the healing process and from this court, we shall all match forward with confidence,” he said.

“With respect will you please sit down, Khaminwa is talking.”

Muigai went on to say that under the rules of court, a senior counsel has a preference to speak first before any other person except the Attorney General.
