The Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) has launched a nationwide initiative to champion peace from the Minbars (Mosque pulpits) and beyond.

In a press briefing at Baluchi Hall in Mombasa, where Imams and Preachers from all six counties of the Coast converged for a Peace Forum, CIPK National Treasurer Sheikh Hassan Omar urged the youth and civil society organizations to shelve the planned August 8, protests.

“We are against the planned protests because it’s clear the protests will not be peaceful. The president has positively responded to some of the grievances and formed a broad based government. What else do the youth want? They should not misuse the freedom given by the constitution,” stated Sheikh Omar.

Current tension

The Council’s National Organization Secretary Sheikh Mohamed Khalifa warned that the country’s peace is on a knife’s edge amid the current tension following antigovernment protests.

He emphasized that the current precarious situation demands wisdom and divine intervention.

Sheikh Khalifa underscored the crucial role of Imams and preachers in fostering harmony across the nation. “Every Imam and preacher will use their platform to spread the message of peace,” he declared. “We have appointed secretaries to assist our Imams, and as we return to our places of worship, our message will resonate with every ear: peace is paramount.”

Highlighting the indispensable nature of peace, Sheikh Khalifa noted, “Peace is the foundation of all that is good. Without it, our ability to work and thrive is severely compromised. Without peace, there is no marriage, no parliament, no business, or anything progressive.”

CIPK Chair for Tana River County Sheikh Abdullahi Gudo emphasized the collective importance of national stability over individual interests. “We will use our mosques and homes to preach peace,” he affirmed.

“While it is the democratic right of our youth to protest, this right is being misused. The resulting violence, destruction of businesses, and loss of lives endanger our peace. We urge the youth to pursue their demands through peaceful means.”

CIPK National Chair Ibrahim Ateka highlighted the current state of peace and tranquility in the country, urging Kenyans to cherish and preserve it. “We are urging all the Imams to take this close to their hearts for the sake of the country because we value this peace we currently enjoy,” said Ateka.
