Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Kipchumba Murkomen, has confirmed that Kasarani Stadium will be ready by November 2024.
The facility, which was closed during Ababu Namwamba’s tenure for renovation in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations, is undergoing extensive upgrades following a successful Pamoja Bid by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
Kasarani Stadium changes
The stadium has been completely stripped, with the canopy and seats removed. The toilets and changing rooms are being redone, and a new roof structure will be erected along with new seats that meet international standards.
During an inspection, Murkomen stated that the contractor has assured him the venue will be ready to host the CHAN 2025, with completion expected by November 30, 2024.
This timeline will allow for CAF inspectors to assess the stadium’s readiness in December.
“As confirmed by the contractor, we aim to complete Kasarani by November 30. This is our target period because we must host CHAN next year. We have agreed with CAF that by the end of December, they should be able to assess the readiness of Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium,” Murkomen said.
He also mentioned that Kipchoge Stadium is being prepared for potential spillover matches during the 2027 AFCON.
Regarding Talanta Stadium, the CS indicated that it would be ready in 18 months and will also undergo approval checks.
“We are very happy with the progress. The contractor is expected to deliver within 18 months, by the end of next year. We should have the facility ready by then for final certification to host the Africa Cup of Nations,” he added.
Kasarani Stadium, originally built in 1987 for the All-Africa Games held in Nairobi, includes a 60,000-seat stadium with a running track and a pitch used for football and rugby union.
The main arena has been used by FKF Premier League teams such as Mathare United, Tusker F.C., and Kariobangi Sharks. Gor Mahia has also utilized the venue for home matches in CAF competitions and the Nairobi derby.
In 2013, the Safari Sevens rugby union tournament was hosted at Kasarani Stadium.
