Nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege has stated that she will not endorse any move to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Gachagua, with cracks emerging within the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in the recent past, has been a man under siege, especially after standing tall in championing what he calls the interest of Mount Kenya.

His efforts to unite with former President Uhuru Kenyatta also put him on a collision path with some members of the Kazi ni Kazi party.

As DP faces numerous opposition within his own party, some have even called for his removal from office, but Chege has said she will not support such an initiative.

“The Mount Kenya Kingpin is Rigathi Gachagua because he has the highest rank politically. I want to say that I would not sign (the impeachment motion),” Chege said, as quoted by a local publication.

On Monday, July 29, 2024, political pundit Mutahi Ngunyi predicted Gachagua’s impeachment and even said that a handshake between President William Ruto and his predecessor is highly likely.

ODM cabinet inclusion

Meanwhile, Chege also touched on the inclusion of opposition figures in the newly nominated cabinet.

“We have supported Azimio’s Raila Odinga for the African Union Commission chairperson position; brought ODM members to cabinet; does it mean that it’s only our own who has done so much wrong that we want to remove him from office?

“If the president could include opposition members in his cabinet, this move either means he wants to unite the country or to finish ODM completely,” she added.

Looking back at the political turbulence Ruto faced under Uhuru, Chege said that the president should not put his deputy under such circumstances.

“If it’s true, it would be very unfortunate. I pray that President Ruto has not come to such thoughts because he himself went through the same thing when he deputised Uhuru. At first, things seemed well until those surrounding Uhuru began talking ill of the DP,” Chege continued.

Highlighting Gachagua’s rise in the political arena, Chege believes the former Mathira Member of Parliament has united the Mount Kenya region.

“For instance, we did not expect Gachagua to rise to DP’s office from the D.O. He has really tried in his efforts to rise in the ranks. When he was given such a mandate, he has rallied people from the region to unite,” she concluded.
