Mombasa’s only 5-star hotel shut down

PrideInn Paradise Beach Resort, the only five-star hotel in Mombasa, on Tuesday suspended operations as a result of booking cancelations following coronavirus cases in the country.

The hotel sent home 500 staff on payable leave.

About 10,000 employees in the tourism sector have lost jobs across coastal region as tourist establishments shut down operations as a result of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic

According to Kenya Coast Tourism Federation (KCTA) chairman Victor Shitakha, the region has continued to bear the brunt of the the disease forcing hotels and holiday homes to scale down operations by sending employees on unpaid leave.

Shitakha, while addressing a media briefing at the coast, said the situation has been worsened by cancellation of inbound flights and the government enforcement on curfew that has paralised business.
