Mombasa County Government has fired 86 doctors among them the Kenya Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union(KMPDU) Secretary General Chibanzi Mwachonda.

According to a statement from the county’s Public Service Board, the 86 doctors were fired for negligence and refusal to end strike and resume to work.

“Following the correspondences shared between the Department of Health and the County Public Service Board on the doctors strike, the Board pursuant to Section 59(1){C} of the County Governments Act No.17 of 2012, hereby conveys its decision to vide Special Board meeting,” read the statement in parts.

The medical workers were dismissed from work on grounds of “failure, refusal and/or neglect to return to work contrary to the Employment Act of 2007.”

Further to their dismissal, the doctors were ordered to hand over County assets with immediate effect.

Mombasa joins Kisumu in laying off health workers who have downed their tools decrying poor working conditions despite being the front-line soldiers fighting the COVID-19.

Kisumu County on Tuesday announced the dismissal of 400 health workers on similar grounds as Mombasa.

Kisumu locked nursing officers out of access to government facilities and nurses who had “absonded” duty required to reapply for their jobs at their will.

Further, Kisumu Chief Officer ordered the nursing officers to show cause why disciplinary actions should not be taken.
