The government yesterday vowed to take serious action against all officers who will be found culpable over the escape of three convicts from Kamiti Maximum Prison.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i who led top government officials on a tour of the prison expressed relief after the three were arrested after three days on the run and warned that measures had been put in place to ensure that such incidents does not occur in future.

The visibly angry Matiang’i blamed negligence on the part of the prison authorities for the escape, saying their mistakes were “unforgivable”.

“It has been an awakening that there are certain lapses that we need to deal with. We have spent the last three days working on how to deal with certain challenges.

We have officers who we believe failed to take responsibility we will ensure the law takes its course.

The mistakes that were committed are unforgivable,” Matiang’i stated.

“I pray to God that we never get here as a country again because the level of anxiety the country got into, was unnecessary because of the lapses that were here,” he added.

He also asked Kenyans to brace for inconveniences at airports, Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and other places because of enhanced security measures.

“ We are telling Kenyans to brace themselves for numerous checks. We will be leaving nothing to chance,” he said.
