Lawyer Makau Mutua has advised Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to resign from office before he gets impeached.

In a statement shared via his official X account on Friday, September 27, 2024, Mutua opined that the troubled DP should quit his job to save his political career.

He explained that impeachment is the death penalty because it lustrates one for life as it bars one from ever holding public office.

” My free advice to DP— please resign before you are impeached. Impeachment is a political death penalty because it lustrates one for life barring you for life from ever holding any public office in the Republic of Kenya,” he said.

The professor’s remarks come amid a heightened impeachment motion against the DP after Kimilili Member of Parliament (MP) Didmus Barasa claimed that over 240 MPS has appended their signatures in favour of the DP’s ouster.

According to Barasa, the charges levelled against the DP in the impeachment motion include attempted coup, gross misconduct, abuse of office, legal breaches, and constitutional violation among others.

The MP and a section of Kenya Kwanza legislators have accused the DP of leveraging on the recent Gen Z demonstrations to overthrow President William Ruto.

“When I arrived to sign the impeachment motion, I was the 242nd one, and there was a queue already. Meaning we are going to have more than what we require to impeach the deputy president. The motion begins by handing over to the Speaker, at the table office.

“He will then go through the motion. The person we are going to impeach is the deputy president, not a deputy governor. He is not a lightweight; he is a person who has anchored himself in very strong tribal beliefs; he is a person who participated in an attempted coup against the president. He is, therefore, a deep-rooted person,” Barasa said.
