Keep it simple

Where did this love story begin?

Sheila: We met at my former workplace where he had come to see one of my colleagues.

I said hello to him and went about my business. I saw him two other times after that, but all we said was a hallo to each other.

Weeks to the end of the year, we finally got the chance to sit and talk and get to know each other.

Everything else picked up from there and here we are today, Mr and Mrs Njenga (laughs).

Kevin: From the moment I saw her, I knew I was going to make her my wife.

The first thing I noticed about her was her smile, which blew me away. I made a plan with my friend who was her colleague to have us meet informally so I could get to know her. The rest is history.

What do you remember about the proposal?

Sheila: We dated for six months. I don’t fancy those big surprise engagements; I am more of ‘just the two of us’ kind of girl.

So, we were at his house and we had a conversation about marriage and he wanted to know my thoughts about it.

And then just right there, he popped the question and of course, I said yes. It wasn’t planned, it was a spur of the moment thing. The ring came in a bit later after that.

How easy or tough was the wedding planning?

Sheila: We had some savings that went a long way in beginning the process.

We also got a lot of support from family and friends; Kevin’s church family really gave us a lot of support, in cash and kind and they did not allow us to break a sweat or worry about how we would pull off the wedding.

But the greatest support came from our parents, they gave  us exceedingly above what we would have asked of them and we truly appreciate them for that.

What did you like about your wedding?

Kevin: I was amazed at how many people attended. There are relatives that came from so far; in fact, if they didn’t come, I wouldn’t have blamed them, but they still chose to honour me with their presence. That really moved me.

Sheila: I loved our elegant theme. We went for navy blue and silver colour scheme.

I was also impressed by the number of people that showed up at the wedding. I see it as an expression of love.

My husband also sang to me as I walked down the aisle. It was a total surprise, and I loved it.

If we were to do it again, the only thing we would change is add more cake (chuckles).

Who was in your line up and how did you choose your bridal party?

Sheila: Our bridal party consisted of family and friends. In total, the whole bridal party had 10  people.

I chose ladies I had known for a while and who knew me well; two of those ladies I have known for 14 years while the others I have known for the last three years.

I had my youngest brother walk me halfway down the aisle and handed me over to my parents who then handed me over to Kevin.

Kevin: I chose to have family as my groomsmen. I chose my brother, cousins and Sheila’s brothers.

Advice to couples planning their wedding

Kevin: Keep it simple and keep things within the budget. Don’t strain yourselves to impress people.

Sheila: There is life after the wedding, so try and work within your budget.
