Easy wall décor tips to add warmth and character to your home

By , July 31, 2025

Have you ever walked into a house and the walls told such a beautiful story? Empty walls can make a home feel cold and unfinished, but with a little creativity, your walls can become your personal gallery, a canvas of memories, culture and style.

One look at your wall should tell me something about you, and end up being a great conversation starter when guests visit.

In Kenyan homes, many people still think décor stops at curtains and furniture, but your walls can be the easiest and most affordable place to add life, colour, and character.

Whether you are renting a bedsitter in Rongai, living in a family home in Kisumu, or styling a holiday house down at the Coast, your walls can become your biggest décor secret.

Here are some practical ideas to help your walls come alive without draining your wallet.

Create a gallery wall

A gallery wall is a collection of art, photos, or objects arranged to draw the eye and tell a story. You do not need expensive art.

Print out family photos, frame your child’s drawings, or display postcards and souvenirs from your travels. A good trick would be to choose a theme and stick to it for a tidy look, such as black and white family portraits or colourful holiday snaps.

If you want an eclectic vibe, mix and match frames and artwork. Buy affordable frames at your local market or thrift shops.

For an even cheaper option, paint old frames to match your colour scheme.

Before putting anything up, lay your frames on the floor and arrange them until you are happy.

Use masking tape or paper cut-outs to test the arrangement on the wall first. This saves you from hammering too many random holes.

Add warmth with textiles and crafts

Why not hang textiles instead of just frames? A bold kikoy, kitenge panel or wall hanging can instantly add colour and texture to your home.

Woven baskets like colourful kiondos and woven trays make great wall features too, especially in clusters.

Macrame hangings, which are making a comeback, are perfect for adding a boho touch.

Many Kenyan artisans make beautiful macrame pieces, too. You can also adorn your walls with embroidery and hand-woven carpets or rags to add more texture.

Mirrors, shelves and clocks

Mirrors reflect light and make rooms look bigger. This is great for Nairobi apartments, where space can feel tight.

Try a statement mirror above a console table or in the hallway.

Use decorative wall panels and obscurely placed mirrors and frames to create an optical illusion by placing mirrors facing each other so the room seems to reflect itself repeatedly.

Floating shelves are another smart idea. Use them to display books, plants, candles, or tiny souvenirs.

You can find simple shelf brackets in hardware stores, and get wooden planks cut to size for cheap.

A stylish clock can double up as wall art.

Choose one that suits your theme and place it where everyone can see it. The clock can either be rustic, modern or vintage depending on your theme.

Paint an accent wall

If your landlord allows, painting is the quickest way to transform plain walls. You do not have to repaint the whole room. Just choose one wall to stand out.

Pick bold colours that suit your furniture, such as teal, burnt orange, or earthy brown.

Try simple paint effects, such as vertical stripes, to add height or geometric shapes for a modern twist. That one wall can become the centrepiece of the room, making it stand out.

Bring life to your walls with greenery

Plants are not just for pots on the floor.

Add floating shelves and place small potted plants on them, such as succulents, pothos or snake plants, which do well indoors.

Hanging planters or well-mounted vertical gardens are trending, too. They save space and instantly brighten dull corners.

Try out indoor all-weather plants that can thrive indoors. Plants not only beautify walls, but they also purify the air.

Tell your story

Your walls should say something about you. Maybe you are a traveller who collects items during travels, pin up a world map and mark the places you have visited.

Display souvenirs like shells, beadwork or crafts picked up during road trips.

Some families dedicate a memory wall to framed photos of grandparents, old wedding pictures, or family milestones.

It is a beautiful way to keep loved ones close, even across generations.

Showcase four family treasures

If you have your grandmother’s old china, silver spoons or serving dishes gathering dust in a box, don’t hide them, hang them.

Vintage platters, colourful dishes and old cutlery can make a beautiful feature wall that shares your family story.

The dining room or kitchen is the obvious spot, but you can create this look anywhere, even in a hallway.

You can mix in traditional pieces too, like mkeka mats, woven baskets or clay pots for an extra Kenyan touch.

Make it a game

Don’t just stack your favourite board games on shelves, make it more creative and transform an entire blank wall into a giant, playable game board.

Pick games and activities you love, then cover the wall with magnetic strips hidden under a custom paint job.

Paint on a life-sized version of classics like Monopoly, Snakes and Ladders, or your own unique creation.

Grab some oversized magnetic pieces and invite friends or family for interactive game nights right on your wall.

Play with lights

Twinkling fairy lights, LED lights and light boards instantly make any room feel warm and inviting.

Use your blank wall to get creative by hanging string lights in different sizes and colours to form a fun pattern.

You could shape them into a heart, a star, or even your initials to add a personal touch.

This simple idea brings life and character to an empty wall. Making the space feel cosy and unique.

Say it with words

Turn your blank wall into a source of daily inspiration by adding word stickers or wall quotes.

Choose a favourite saying, a religious verse, or an uplifting phrase that means something to you and your family.

Word decals are easy to stick on and remove, making them perfect for renters, too.

You can place them above your bed, behind the couch, in the hallway, or simply anywhere you would like a reminder of hope, love, or motivation.
