Residents of Mathioya and Kangema in Murang’a County are living in fear after landslides occurred in the areas causing massive destruction.

In one incident, a family from Gitugi escaped death by a whisker after the landslide swept their house on Tuesday night.

John Githinji said they heard a loud bang in the middle of the night and when they got out they found their house had been disintegrated and part of it swept away.

It was a lucky escape for his children who were not at home by the time of the incident as they had gone to visit a relative.

“A huge boulder rolled down and stopped a few steps away from the house and I am afraid it can roll further causing more destruction,” he said.

In the neighboring Kairo village, two farms were completely cut off and swept away.

Mathioya sub county assistant commissioner Kipchumba Ruto said the disaster management team has mapped out the risky areas and they are mobilizing people to move to safer grounds.
