Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has pledged to remain true and loyal to the ideals of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party after being confirmed as the deputy party leader, taking over from his predecessor Rigathi Gachagua.

Kindiki in a statement shared via his official X account on Monday, November 11, 2024, vowed to assist the UDA Party Leader President William Ruto in the implementation of the party manifesto.

The former Interior Cabinet Secretary further pointed out that the ruling party’s manifesto is anchored on agriculture, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise(MSME) economy, housing and settlement, healthcare and the digital superhighway and creative economy.

“The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) stands for the unity, oneness, and indivisibility of our Country. I will be true and loyal to the ideals of our party, and assist the Party Leader, President William Ruto in the implementation of the party manifesto anchored on five key pillars; Agriculture, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise(MSME) Economy, Housing and Settlement, Healthcare and the Digital Superhighway and Creative Economy,” Kindiki stated.

Kindiki on deputy party leadership role

Kindiki went ahead to state that he had accepted to be the deputy party leader of UDA, in recognition and appreciation of the pivotal role of political parties in governance and the growth of democracy.

He took over the position following the resolution of the UDA National Executive Committee (NEC) in a meeting held at the Party Headquarters at Hustler Plaza on Monday, November 11, 2024.

“In recognition and appreciation of the pivotal role of political parties in governance and growth of democracy, with tremendous honour and respect, accepted to be Deputy Party Leader of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), pursuant to the resolution of the National Executive Committee (NEC) in a meeting held at the Party Headquarters,” Kindiki posted on X.

Gachagua relinquishes role

Kindiki assumes the role after he succeeded Gachagua as the deputy president following his successful impeachment.

The UDA NEC noted that following Gachagua’s impeachment, the party’s constitution requires that he relinquish his role as the party’s deputy leader.

“That by virtue of the resolution of the National Assembly and the vote of the Senate and by operation of Articles 75 (3) and145 (7) of the Constitution of Kenya as read together with Article 8.2.19 of the UDA Party Constitution, Rigathi Gachagua is unable to perform the duties of the office of Deputy Party Leader and subsequently ceases to hold office as Deputy Party leader,” the NEC resolution read in part.

In a move which further isolates the disgraced former deputy president, the UDA party has expunged Gachagua’s name from the party leadership following weeks of prolonged court cases challenging his impeachment.
