The postponed 12th edition of the Mombasa Open Tong-IL Moo-Do International Martial Arts Championship is set to take place from December 12 to 24 at the Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa.
So far, a record 574 participants from 35 countries, marking its largest turnout since its inception.
Speaking in Nairobi yesterday, Federation chairman Clarence Mwakio confirmed the impressive numbers, attributing them to the championship’s growing global credibility despite its earlier cancellation in August due to financial challenges.
“Kenya is a powerhouse in Tong-IL Moo-Do, and hosting such a world-class event elevates our country’s status,” stated Mwakio.
He further appealed to President William Samoei Ruto and Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, the Creative Economy, and Sports Kipchumba Murkomen to support the event through sponsorships and facilitate the national team, Jasiri.
“The championship is one of the few international events hosted in Kenya this year, and government support would boost the morale of the players,” he added.
Mwakio noted that Kenya’s Tong-IL Moo-Do national team has been training for the past four months in preparation for the event, which they have dominated, winning every edition since its inception 11 years ago.
World Tong-IL Moo-Do Federation President Grand Master Takamitsu Hoshiko expressed goodwill towards the championship, emphasizing its importance on the federation’s global calendar.
He highlighted the increased participation, with newcomers such as São Tomé and Príncipe, Vanuatu, and Uganda joining the fray.
The event will feature 324 international participants from 35 countries, while host nation Kenya will field 250 players, including 120 from the national team Jasiri.
